You will also need to bring in your South Dakota driver's license.
DOCUMENTS TO BRING FOR SD TITLED MOTOR VEHICLE, Trailer, boat, etc. TO TRANSFER TO YOURSELF
  • SD driver's license or ID for each person to be made owner.  If you do not have a SD driver's license, you will need to produce a current out of state driver's license and your social security card.
  • The previous owners SD Title with their signature completed in the necessary area.
  • Bill of sale which contains date of purchase, price paid, year, make & model of vehicle.
  • If you are listing more than one owner, you will need to let us know if you want to use the word "OR" between the names which will allow all owners to sign independently, requiring only one of the owners to come into the office in person.   If you are listing the owners with the word "AND", all owners will need to be present for the transaction.
  • If you have a loan on your vehicle, we will need the complete name and address of the lienholder.
  • If you have plates to transfer from a previously sold vehicle or one traded in on your new vehicle, please jot down the plate number.
  • Fees are calculated at the time your paperwork is received.  The amount showing on line #13 on your application received from a dealer does not include registration fees.
DOCUMENTS TO BRING FOR OUT OF STATE titled vehicles you have purchased to transfer to yourself

Documents to bring when moving in from out of state
  • Your vehicle title from the state you previously had your vehicle registered.   We need the actual title; a photocopy will NOT work.   If you do not have the title because you have a loan on your vehicle, contact your lender, tell them you have moved.  We can fax or e-mail a request to your lienholder if you can provide a fax number or e-mail address and the vehicle information to us.  We will not be able to process your South Dakota title without the previous title.

  • If you are licensing a trailer, we need a scale ticket for the weight of the trailer only.   This can be acquired at any local elevator or a printout from the manufacturer showing the dry, empty, unladen weight NOTHING with a G in front of the lbs.
  • If your previous title reads "AND" between the names or there is no distinction between the names, all owners will need to be present to transfer the title.  If the previous title reads "OR" between the names, any owner can transfer the title, but we will still need driver's license information of all owners.
  • EFFECTIVE 9/14/2022, the state of South Dakota requires that proof of tax paid be submitted for ALL VEHICLES being transferred from another state, if titled within 2 years of moving to SD.  This can include a receipt from the dealer it was purchased from, a receipt from the state, or other official documentation showing the amount of tax paid.  A copy of the bill of sale listing the tax due is not the same as a paid receipt.
  • Lienholders name and address if applicable.
  • Current milage for all vehicles under 20 years of age.
  • Please call the office to see if there are any other exceptions.
how does my lienholder know if they are listed on my title
South Dakota is an ELT (electronic lien title) state which means there is not a paper title issued until your loan has been paid off.   Once you have made your final payment to the bank, they will file a document with the DMV in Pierre to release their interest, you will then receive a clear title in the mail.  If you have an out of state lender, they may not be familiar with the ELT process, they can contact our office for further information.
